When you first get engaged your mind is full of ideas ideas and to-do’s as you begin the wedding planning process! Some of the first decisions you’ll need to make are securing a wedding venue, choosing a date, and buying a wedding dress. However, before making any of those decisions you’ll first need to determine your wedding style.
A wedding style is defined as something that describes a wedding’s look and feel. It is often an adjective like rustic, modern, elegant, vintage, etc. When you and your fiance determine what style wedding best fits you as a couple, this will provide guidelines for making wedding planning decisions. I like the analogy that making decisions without first determining your style is like buying ingredients for a recipe that you don’t have yet.
So, where do you start with choosing a wedding style? I recommend that instead of diving head first into the world of Pinterest, you and your fiance answer a few simple questions that can help guide you toward your wedding style.
1. Describe your home decorating style.
Do you see natural wood elements, geometric shaped art, clean lines, lace and dainty decorations?
2. Describe your favorite kind of date night.
Do you enjoy hiking and doing something active, exploring a new art gallery, dinner and a movie?
3. What are your go-to shoes?
Do you live in heels, flip-flops, eclectic shoes, cowboy boots?
4. Where do you envision your dream wedding take place?
Do you envision dancing in a grand ballroom, getting married in a church surrounded by family, eating at farm tables under twinkly lights, getting married in a field overlooking mountains, an outdoor ceremony at an elegant estate, traveling to a unique destination and getting married on a beach?
5. What kind of “vibe” do you want your wedding to have?
Do you envision a formal sit-down dinner, a casual barbecue, a chic cocktail hour, a relaxed outdoor ceremony?
Hopefully those questions allowed you to think outside of the box and you’re beginning to notice a certain “look and feel” that you and your fiance are naturally drawn to.
Try also taking this quiz to determine your wedding style. Here is a wedding style dictionary which lists lots of different style options.
There is no wrong choice when choosing a wedding style! Try your best not to get too caught up on what Pinterest, the internet, or people say you need to have. Choose what is “you” and will make you and your fiance most comfortable on your wedding day!

Awesome advice! Pinterest is a wonderful tool to find inspiration, but sometimes it can almost distract you from what you really want as soon as you see all the lavish and wild ideas…honing in on what makes you “you” is definitely a great first step!!
