One thing that I believe most brides don’t typically think about until their actual wedding day arrives is who they want to be present with them during their getting ready photos. As a photographer, during the “getting ready” photos I am capturing the bride as her dress is being zipped or tied, as jewelry and shoes are being put on, and any final touches (like adjusting the veil, make-up, and dress). As a bride, it is up to you to choose who you would like to be present and helping you during those moments. I believe it is extremely advantageous to plan in advance who you would like to be present with you for a few reasons.
1. Planning in advance helps to RELIEVE STRESS.
As a bride begins her preparations on her wedding day, the last thing she wants is unnecessary stress! By choosing in advance who she would like to be present with her during the getting ready photos, this alleviates having to make extra decisions. I recommend for brides to notify those they would like to be present in advance and request that they are dressed in their wedding attire and their hair and make-up is complete. This prevents any unnecessary rushing and stress as everyone will be all set for photos! Genuine joy is so much more evident in photos when the getting ready portion of the day runs smoothly!
2. The getting ready portion of the day SETS THE TONE FOR THE ENTIRE WEDDING DAY.
Brides, what type of vision do you have for your wedding day? Do you picture an intimate getting ready time or a more party-like atmosphere? This portion of the day sets the tone for the entire day. If you want to have quiet moments with just your mother, sibling(s), or maid of honor, then choose that! If you want music in the background with lots of encouraging bridesmaids by your side, then make that happen! It’s important to create an environment from the very start of your day that aligns with your vision for the day.
3. Choosing in advance ALLOWS MORE TIME FOR PORTRAITS.
When brides and those that they’ve chosen to be present for the getting ready photos are ready on time, this allows for more time for portraits! This allows me to get creative when I have more time and there is a relaxed environment. You will receive more photos and a greater variety of shots when everyone isn’t rushing and people are still trying to finish their hair and make-up. A smooth getting ready time is super beneficial as we then transition into bridal portraits. Instead of stressing about being behind on schedule, brides can focus on the excitement and anticipation of the day!
Brides, you’ve dreamt of your wedding day your entire lives and preparing in advance for this portion of the day will relieve stress, set the appropriate tone for the day, and allow for more photos!

Such a good point Stacey! From my days as a coordinator, I’ve seen Brides in tears before their wedding because someone (bossy future step-mother in-laws, drunk mothers and even a best man’s angry girlfriend) acted up. I’ve also seen Brides, in prayer circles ,with their closest friends that brought tears of joy to my eyes- so much love and positivity. Considering who you will spend your morning with and what you will be doing is a detail that should not be overlooked-it absolutely sets the tone and energy, for the day.
