One of my greatest joys in life is encouraging others to pursue their passions. We all have those innate giftings, desires, hobbies, and passions that make us unique. I love talking with people and helping them identify their inner passions and encouraging them in growing and pursuing those passions!
Not every passion needs to become a business. Some passions are simply meant to help and serve others, create joy, foster relaxation, etc. However, if you do have any desire to turn your passion into a business, I have a few tips to help you get started!
1. Start by Asking Questions
Don’t just assume from the get go that your passion will automatically turn into a healthy, profitable business. Before getting started make sure you’re asking some key questions like:
– Is there a need in the marketplace for my product or service?
– What problem will I be solving for my customers?
– Can I create profit with my product or service?
– Who else is doing what I want to be doing?
– What skills, strengths, and talent do I bring to the table?
If you find that there is a need in the marketplace for what you’re hoping to offer, that’s a great sign that you’re on to something! Make sure that your product or service is solving a specific problem for potential customers. Start by asking some of these important questions that will help you discover if you have a viable business idea.
2. Become a Voracious Learner
Your passion will most likely propel you into becoming a learning machine! You’ll find yourself spending countless hours devouring all the information you can find. Thankfully there are tons of online resources now to learn about any topic you can possibly imagine. Don’t forget in the midst of researching about your specific passion to also start learning about business and marketing. Many people can do the same craft but it will be your business savvy that will help you stand out and allow your business to grow!
One of my favorite resources for learning business basics is
Christy Wright’s Business Boutique. She offers tons of blog posts, videos, and podcasts all with the purpose of equipping women to create businesses they love!
3. Reach Out For Help
I bet if you’ve had this passion long enough you’ve already found and follow certain people who are successfully doing what you want to do! First, I would encourage you to devour all the content they’ve produced. Second, reach out to them! Ask to set up a mentor session if that’s something they offer.
I would encourage you to meet up with someone who has been doing this longer than you have. They will have so much wisdom to offer and can help you avoid the mistakes they made when they first started. There’s no one better to learn from than those who have walked in your shoes and have created a successful business in the area you’re passionate about! Not only will you walk away with tons of information to apply right away, you’ll be able to jump start your business more quickly than your peers. It’s also awesome to grow your network and create friends in your industry as you’re getting started as well.
4. Push Past Fear
Let me start off by saying that some fear is good and necessary. For example, the fear that if you quit your job right away you could be thrown into financial turmoil is good fear. That kind of fear is preventing you from making potentially disastrous decisions. The kind of fear I’m talking about here are the lies you hear playing like a soundtrack in your head.
Once you start doing something important and you push yourself outside your comfort zone you will start hearing voices saying things like “You’re never going to be able to create a successful business,” “You’ll never be as good as her,” “You’re not good enough to do this,””Everyone’s going to judge me,” etc.
First, you must recognize that these thoughts are LIES! They are trying to prevent you from pursuing your dream. One way to quickly recognize a fear based lie is if you keep hearing the word never. These are amplified lies that are not factual. Try replacing the lie with a truthful statement like “Everyone’s got to start somewhere and even though I’m not perfect yet, I’m going to keep pressing forward.”
Fear is something that will not just pop up in the beginning stages of your business but as you continue to grow it over time. This is something I battle on a regular basis! The sooner you are able to recognize the lies and replace them with truth, the better!
This step may seem like an obvious step but is often the most daunting. It can be overwhelming in the beginning and you may be tempted to believe you need to have it all figured before you start. That is a lie! Start now! Take baby steps each day working on your craft, putting yourself out there, learning, and creating the business of your dreams one step at a time. Don’t expect instant growth but rather focus on slow growth over time.
Something I have to constantly remind myself is done is better than perfect! It’s natural to want everything to be perfect before you put something out there or try anything. However, nothing will hold you back more!
You can do this! Take it one step at a time! Keep persevering and showing up and you’ll be surprised how far you can go over time!
